Walking in Sussex – Birling Gap circular walk, ideal for early spring

Follow the old drovers and smugglers routes to the sea from the charming Sussex downland village of East Dean in this Birling Gap circular walk and get a real sense of the landscape’s long history.

This classic walk has the added benefit of a fabulous walkers’ pub at the start and finish as well as a café half way round – so you can stop for a breather and enjoy well-earned refreshments afterwards.

The three mile route is a moderate walk, all on clearly indicated paths or across open downland and usually takes about an hour and a half to complete. Although stunning at any time of the year, this walk is especially magical in early spring. And during the colder months, it’s best walked anti-clockwise with the prevailing wind on your back. You can also find the route on an OS Explorer Map 123.

Highlights along the route

Birling Gap Circular Walk

The Tiger Inn by Tracey Doug

The Birling Gap circular walk starts at the Tiger Inn, nestled in the idyllic downland village of East Dean. Described as one of Britain’s Best Pubs in ‘Country Life’ Magazine and as the “perfect start and finish for downland expeditions”, the pub is situated opposite the village green. Dating from the 15th-century, the inn provides hearty food, a log fire and a warm welcome.

Birling Gap Circular Walk

The Seven Sisters

On this Birling Gap circular walk, expect spectacular sweeping views over open downland and East Sussex coast. Plus the opportunity to see wildlife and several interesting breeds of sheep from the Seven Sisters Sheep Centre. You’ll also enjoy views out towards Belle Tout Lighthouse for most of the walk. This lighthouse was built in 1834 but its light was not seen in sea mists, so it was replaced in 1902 by Beachy Head lighthouse which stands further east on the shore. It was moved back from the cliff edge in 1999 on rails and is now a B&B.

Discover too part of the world-famous Seven Sisters along a cliff path section of the walk. What a view! One of Britain’s most photographed stretches of coastline, the chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters rise over 200ft above the sea.

At Birling Gap, take a well-earned breather in the café for a cuppa and a slice of cake, served with a backdrop of the stunning sea view. Take some time too to climb the steps by the beach at Birling Gap for a fantastic view of the Seven Sisters.
