Spring comes early to south east Cornwall so there’s nowhere better if you’re looking to get the kids out into the great outdoors this half term.

Choose from wildlife parks, adrenalin-packed activities, events galore, pristine beaches, countless walks and wonderful gardens at their freshest. There’s plenty of space to run about, fly kites, ride bikes and play in the vast National Trust estates here too.

Details: Birds, beetles or frogs? Butterflies, snakes or even a hedgehog! Discover how to transform your garden this half term into a welcoming home for wildlife. The team at the Lost Gardens of Heligan will show you how easy it can be to create homes and provide food to attract a variety of creatures. There are free workshops too – have a go at making a mini bug hotel and some tasty bird treats.

2 Heart-pumping thrills

Details: Thrill-seekers should make for the flooded quarry experience at Adrenalin Quarry this half term. A completely different and memorable family experience, suitable for all ages. Hurl your loved ones down the UK’s biggest, maddest 150 ft zip wire off the quarry cliffs. Ride the UK’s tallest giant cliff top swing which hoists and then plunges 3-at-a-time over the lake. Just when you think there’s no turning back, you pull out of the dive, briefly experience zero gravity, before doing it all again – backwards. After all that, you may need to refuel in their on site café!

Where: Buckland Abbey (The National Trust), Yelverton
When: February 13- 21; 10.30am – 4.30pm
Details: Get the little’uns outdoors and stir up their interest in the natural world on the medieval beast trail. Grab a trail booklet and crayon and track down the moldiwarpes, coneys, herinacius and rana (moles, rabbits, hedgehogs and frogs to you and me) on engraved plaques hidden in the estate’s woods. Make a brass rubbing of each and when you’ve finished, your booklet will have become a medieval-style bestiary of animals to remind you of your adventure!

Details: Get up close to an array of wild, exotic and domestic animals at Porfell Wildlife Park this half term. Porfell has been designed to create an ‘un-zoo’ environment, promoting education, conservation and entertainment in a 15 acre countryside setting. It is home to over 250 animals from around the world, with animals from endangered species as well as plenty of family favourites. Kids will love interacting with the animals on the children’s farm. Enjoy a stroll through the surrounding ancient woodland too and explore a recreated Masaai Village.

Details: Build a shelter, light a controlled fire and learn survival skills in the wild. This winter outdoor fun is run by Cotehele’s partner Jack at Serious Outdoor Skills and takes place in Comfort Wood, a beautiful part of the estate right on the edge of the river Tamar (booking essential).

Stick Man at The Eden Project

Where: The Eden Project, Bodelva
When: February 13 – 21
Details: This half-term at Eden, younger children will love meeting Stick Man, the ever-popular Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler character. Discover how he overcomes encounters with playful dogs and nest building birds and take part in Stick Man inspired crafts, games and Pooh stick racing. Older children can pick up essential survival techniques from experts including how to shoot a blowpipe and make a fire, and get close up to some visiting mini beasts with the return of Crocodile Joe.
