South Cornwall Winter Activities

Main Image: Adrenalin Quarry, Menheniot, Liskeard

The south coast of Cornwall is sheltered by the bulk of the county, giving it a much milder temperature, which makes the area a great place to visit in winter. In addition to wonderful walks – which can be accompanied by warming breaks in quaint country pubs – there are lots of south Cornwall winter activities, providing entertainment for a variety of tastes.

Seasonal Events

South Cornwall Winter Activities: Staycation Holidays, Eden Project, st Pirans Day

Ice Rink & World Pasty Championships © Eden Project

Celebrate winter and experience the chills, thrills (and skills?) at the Eden Project's glittering ice rink, open until February 2022.

Great Trethew hosts the East Cornwall Hunt Point-to-Point on the 27th February. It’s a great winter day out in the countryside where people come together to enjoy the sport and to socialise. The course is a very hilly elongated oval with long straights and two sharp bends and an uphill finish – very testing when wet!.

St Piran’s Day is celebrated at various venues across Cornwall on March 5th each year as the national day of Cornwall. Saint Piran, or ‘Perran’ as he is also known, is famed for his discovery of the precious metal tin. Saint Piran is the patron saint of tin-miners and Saint Piran’s Day was originally observed as a ‘tinner’s holiday’ by the numerous tin-miners of Cornwall.

Come along for a fabulous day at the World Pasty Championships, held at the Eden Project. Celebrating their 10th anniversary in 2022, it's fittingly on St Piran’s Day itself, Saturday March 5 2022, with Cornish Pasty Week running from Sunday February 27th. Why not enter your own pasty baked in your toasty holiday cottage kitchen? Great British Bake Off wannabes beware…entries are from all around the world from the Americas to Australia with pasties derived from recipes passed down by Cornish emigrants over centuries.

Great Family Days Out

South Cornwall Winter Activities: Staycation Holidays, Carnglaze Caverns, Dartmoor Zoo, Virgin Hot Air Balloons

Carnglaze Slate Caverns by Peter Levers

Carnglaze Caverns is one of south Cornwall’s most magical days out for all the family. This former slate mine is open all year and is perfect in all weathers. Explore the underground cavern with a guided tour and informative commentary on how the mine was worked, ending at the underground lake with its crystal clear blue/green water. You can also experience a lovely and magical woodland walk in an enchanted Dell – the little’uns will love to count the faeries along the way!

Have you seen the fantastic film ‘We Bought a Zoo’? If you haven’t, the staff at Staycation Holidays highly recommend it! Anyway, it was filmed at Dartmoor Zoo, an ideal destination for a winter family fun day out. Just like the movie, you can get up close to a wonderful array of animals, with experiences to choose from for all ages. With big cats, mammals, birds and reptiles, there’s something for everyone.

Hop into a basket and venture on a nostalgic Virgin hot air balloon flight where you can see beautiful South Cornwall from a totally unique perspective. The nearest launch site for this once-in-a-lifetime experience is just outside Liskeard. As well as your hour-long airborne adventure, you’ll also be given the chance to help with the inflation and deflation of Virgin’s huge iconic red balloons. Learn all about the mechanics of ballooning, while meeting fellow passengers and of course getting to know your pilot and crew members. After landing wherever the wind takes you, you’ll be presented with your hot air balloon flight certificate, signed by your pilot and endorsed by Sir Richard Branson. As the 3-4 hour experience draws to a close you can celebrate your airborne adventure with a traditional Champagne toast and purchase photos from your flight.

Activities for Half Term & March

South Cornwall Winter Activities: Staycation Holidays, Monkey Sanctuary, Adrenalin Quarry, Siblyback Lake

The Monkey Sanctuary near Looe is a wonderful safe home for primates, mainly rescued from the primate pet trade. Set in beautiful woodland overlooking the Cornish coast, the sanctuary usually opens for February Half Term.

For a completely different and memorable family experience at half term, hurl your loved ones down the maddest 150 ft zip line off some quarry cliffs at Adrenalin Quarry. The flooded quarry experience near Liskeard also includes a giant cliff top swing and quarry coasteering for ages 10+.

Fish for Rainbow trout at Siblyback Country Park near Liskeard. Booking is essential for the fleet of six angling boats, as well as a wheelyboat for disabled anglers, which should be booked 48 hours in advance.

For all these wonderful south Cornwall winter activities, take a look at our nearby properties, including our farm cottages near Looe, sleeping 2 – 6.
