Thousands of us have jumped back in the saddle in response to the coronavirus pandemic - good news for the planet, as well as our waistlines!

Cycling is a great way to keep fit, boost our immunity, entertain our families and (obviously) get from A to B. With this in mind, and to celebrate Bike Week (30 May To 5 June 2021), whose theme is health and wellbeing, here are 10 wonderful holiday cottages to inspire your next two-wheeled adventure.

1. Pontardawe Cottages | Glamorgan

Our six eco friendly traditional farm holiday cottages for cycling at Plas Farm are set in over 100 acres of private countryside between the Brecon Beacons and Gower. They are perfectly located for touring South Wales and popular with mountain bikers, with secure bike storage and bike washing facilities. The cottages are convenient for the Afan Forest trails and there are relaxing rides from your cottage doorstep on the local country lanes. Or hop onto the Celtic Cycling Trail (NCR 43) in Pontardawe just over a mile away. This links to the Wales Coast Path which runs along Swansea Bay – a city with one of the most beautiful settings in Britain. If you don’t bring bikes, there are many places to hire cycles nearby.

Less than three miles from Bakewell in the heart of the beautiful Peak District National Park, this is ideal countryside to explore by bike - from hardcore limestone mountain climbs and the high heather clad moorlands to easy, off-road routes such as the traffic-free Monsal Trail starting at Bakewell’s former railway station or the Tissington Trail from Parsley Hay, four miles away. The cottages share a large, indoor swimming pool, games room, play area and three acres of grounds in which to unwind after your ride and you can even order in a delicious pea and pie dinner if you are too exhausted to cook!

3. West Hollowcombe Farm | Exmoor

Our cluster of four stone eco-barns are tucked away on the southern edge of Exmoor National Park in the heart of Lorna Doone country. The Two Moors Way passes the gate and numerous cycle rides are accessible directly from the cottages. The location is better for fairly fit riders as the slopes are quite steep in places and there is an excellent 16th century inn for that post-ride drinkat Tarr Steps close by. If you have young kids, you can drive across the moor to Bideford and access the Tarka Trail, a disused railway line, for excellent, flat cycling. Our delightful cottages come with shared access to 60 acres of private fields and woodlands including a designated SSSI, a shared children’s play area, secure bike storage and a barbecue terrace for your morning cuppa.

Our 26 holiday cottages in Ullswater and the Eden Valley have excellent cycling routes from the doorstep and you can arrange for road and mountain bikes to be dropped off during your stay. You can hire for as many days as you like and even opt for electric bikes which will help you get to the top of the most daunting hills. Alternatively, embark on some lovely family cycling routes in the Ullswater Valley, hopping on and off the Ullswater ‘Steamers’. Or take on Whinlatter Forest, home to the longest purpose-built mountain bike trails in the Lakes. You can hire bikes here at Cyclewise which also runs family mountain-bike skills sessions during school holidays. You’ll find GoApe here too for a different kind of adrenalin rush. Guests staying at our Glassonby and Melmerby properties are just off the C2C cycle route.
