Fancy a UK Staycation including a vineyard tour?

From crisp whites to velvety reds, hundreds of vineyards up and down England are producing magnificent award-winning wines.

To celebrate English Wine Week (19-27 June 2021), we've rounded up 10 wonderful UK vineyard tours that are ripe for a visit during your next Staycation Holiday. Who needs Provence and Tuscany when you have these beauties nearby?

1. Trevibban Mill | Cornwall

Trevibban Mill is an award-winning stylish vineyard in the rural Cornish countryside. Informal guided tours run from February through to the end of October. You can book a regular tour (approx. 1.5 hours) which take place every Wednesday to Saturday at 4pm, followed by a tutored tasting of 5 selected wines. Alternatively book the longer Sunday morning walking tour (approx. 3 hours) which starts at 10.30am and covers the vineyard, orchard and lakeside, exploring how the wines and ciders are made. You’ll get to try seven selected wines with lunch while enjoying beautiful views across the valley. If tours aren’t really your thing but wine is, you can do a tasting of seven wines (booking advised) led by an experienced member of staff.

2. Furleigh Estate | Dorset

Set in West Dorset’s wonderful green and rolling hills, Furleigh Estate makes some of the best sparkling wine in the country. This 85 acre former dairy farm has been transformed into a modern vineyard with 22,000 vines grown on its south-facing slopes and a purpose-built winery containing state of the art equipment. Tours take place twice a day on Wednedays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays when you’re given the chance to see how the estate’s Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meurnier are produced, and finish with a tasting session led by an in-house expert. The estate is teaming with wildlife: buzzards fly overhead, deer, pheasants and partridge flit freely between the vines, and heron and geese are regularly spotted loitering around the lake.

3. Pebblebed and Lily Farm | Devon

Discover award-winning wine in the picturesque estuary town of Topsham, near Exeter with a tour of Pebblebed Vineyards between May and October. Then pop over to Pebblebed’s tasting cellar on the riverside near the Quay to taste their wines accompanied by local tapas, followed by a stroll around Topsham’s historic port. Alternatively, head to Lily Farm Vineyard for a little breath of Devon fresh air. Offering tasting tours from April to September, this small, family run boutique vineyard, established in 2005, produces award-winning English sparkling and still wines and has an outdoor café for a tipple and light refreshments. It’s on Route 2 of the Budleigh Salterton to Exmouth link of the National Cycle Network, which sounds a great way to get there.

4. Camel Valley Vineyard | Cornwall

Nestled among the medieval marvels of rural Bodmin, Camel Valley vineyard occupies an idyllic setting on sun-drenched slopes near the Camel River. The only vineyard in the UK to hold a royal warrant, Camel Valley currently produces sparkling, rosé and white wines and has scooped up a whole heap of international prizes and supply to a handful of British supermarkets. Relaxed, friendly tours run throughout the week (advance booking required) and include tastings of their favourite creations. If you don’t want to take a tour, you can still soak up the beautiful Camel Valley views with a drink on the terrace and choose some bottles to take home. Found just off the famous Camel Trail, you can also combine a gentle cycle ride or walk with your visit.

5. Wyken Vineyards | Suffolk

Guests at our gorgeous Vicarage House in the Norfolk Brecks can hop over to Suffolk to Wyken Vineyards. This farm and estate is home to a seven-acre vineyard which produces award-winning wines, including English Wine of the Year. Pick up some goodies in their lovely shop, buy some Wyken wine, experience fine dining at its atmospheric restaurant, the Leaping Hare, or sample local produce from the Saturday Farmer’s Market. You are free to walk to the vineyard from the restaurant through their Home Meadow and beautiful ancient woodland. For children, there are animals in the meadow, including llamas. It makes the perfect day out for the whole family. Big groups of 10 or more need pre-book for a wander round Wyken.

6. Aldwick Estate | Somerset

If you’re planning a Somerset holiday, your taste buds are in for a real treat. Discover the secrets of Somerset’s largest vineyard at The Aldwick Estate just a short distance away. This vineyard, planted in 2008, is set in open countryside with magnificent views, offering tastings and expert-led tours. Explore the 11 acres of vines that produce award-winning sparkling and still wines followed by a wine tasting session in the wonderfully appointed tasting room. 7. Giffords Hall Vineyard | Suffolk

Producing a myriad of sparkling wines, award-winning rosés and fruity red pinot noirs, this family run vineyard is located in the pretty village of Hartest amongst miles of rolling Suffolk hills. The vineyard dates back to the 1970s and is planted on the sandy clay of an ancient glacial riverbed, offering the perfect soil to produce quality wines. The whole family are welcome to take part in private or group tours through the vineyard and around the winery, showing you the various stages of production, before ending up in the tasting room where you’ll have the chance to taste three still wines and three liqueurs alongside a selection of canapés. Even dogs are welcome, but must stay on a lead since the vineyard is also home to a collection of free-roaming lambs and chicks.

9. Three Choirs Vineyard | Gloucestershire

Provence in all but name, the Three Choirs Vineyard is one of England’s oldest and most distinguished, continuing to put British wines on the map with rave reviews. Nestled within the rolling hills and valleys of rural Gloucestershire, Three Choirs enjoy a unique microclimate and 75 acres of glorious vineyard. It’s a wonderful place for a stroll too, and there’s even a nature trail to keep little ones busy. As well as daily tours and tastings, there is a restaurant, a micro-brewery and a friendly shop on site selling eight wines.

10. Poulton Hill Estate | Gloucestershire

Founded in 2010, Poulton Hill Estate is a small friendly family-run vineyard nestled in the iconic Cotswolds landscape and close to the Roman town of Cirencester. Run by two passionate and hard working women, enjoy a relaxing tour of the history of their vineyard and a tasting of four of their wines in the grand Long Room. They harvest by hand to ensure the very best ingredients are used and this is just one of the reasons their English sparkling wines have won many awards. The estate is also home to rare-breed sheep, Jacob’s Sheep and Olde English Babydoll Southdown Sheep - two of the oldest breeds in England. They are friendly sheep and are perfect for keeping the area around the vines tidy without nibbling the grapes, and they fertilize the soil as they graze.
