5 Easy Easter Makes for Kids

It’s always fun making things together, so get the kids stuck into some making and baking and make this Easter extra special with our 5 easy ideas.

1 Chocolate Egg Nests

Easy Easter Makes for Kids: Chocolate Egg Nests
Brilliant to make with little children over the holidays, these easy chocolate crispy cakes are a perennial favourite.

Ingredients

100g milk or white chocolate, broken into pieces
50g butter
2 tbsp golden syrup
100g rice krispies
24 mini chocolate eggs for the top

Method

1. Line a 12 hole fairy cake tin with paper cases.

2. Slowly melt the chocolate, butter and syrup in a small heatproof bowl over a pan of gently simmering water (do not let the base of the bowl touch the water). Stir the mixture until smooth.

3. Remove the bowl from the heat and gently stir in the rice krispies until all of the cereal is coated in the chocolate.

4. Divide the mixture between the paper cases and press two mini chocolate eggs into the centre of each nest. Pop into the fridge for an hour, or until completely set.

2 Easy Easter Biscuits

Easy Easter Makes for Kids: Easy Easter biscuits

Children will love to make these yummy Easter biscuits – perfectly simple for a kids Easter baking project.

Ingredients

125g softenend butter
75g caster sugar
1 egg yolk
200g plain flour, sifted
¼ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp mixed spice
zest of one lemon
75g currants
about 2 tbsp milk

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200CF/Gas Mark 6 and grease or line a baking tray (or two if you have them).

2. Whisk together the butter and sugar until it is really light. Whisk in the egg yolk, then stir in the sieved flour, spices, lemon zest and raisins. Add just enough milk to bring the dough together, then tip the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently.

3. With a rolling pin, roll out the dough until it is approximately 5 mm thick and cut out the biscuits with Easter cutters. We have also made Easter pigs, Easter trains and Easter circles before now because they were the only cutters we had!

4. Pop the shapes onto the baking sheet(s), and bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until golden.

5. Transfer to a wire rack to cool and sprinkle with some caster sugar before serving.

3 Crackin’ Cress Heads

Easy Easter Makes for Kids: Crackin' Egg Heads

Children will love these eggshells with living cress ‘hair’, a great table decoration for Sunday lunch.

Method

Next time you’re using an egg, try to break it so there’s one big half and one tiny half. Keep the big half, wash it and pop it in an egg cup. Use felt tips to draw a face (you can really push the boat out by adding some googly eyes too!), then fill it with dampened kitchen roll or cotton wool. Sprinkle on some cress seeds, pop it on the windowsill and watch your Egg Head grow some cress hair, before gobbling it up in a sandwich!

4 Simple Dyed Eggs

Easy Easter Makes for Kids: Simple dyed eggs

A great way to let your kids be creative while creating less mess!

Method

For traditional dyed eggs, hard boil some eggs and then use elastic bands or shaped labels like little dots to mask off different patterns. Gently lower into a bowl of water mixed with food colouring and leave for 30 minutes. Dry the eggs and remove the bands or stickers. Rub on some vegetable oil to give a shine and use to fill a bowl or basket.

5 Good Old Fashioned Painted Eggs

Easy Easter Makes for Kids: Painted Eggs

You can buy loads of Easter craft kits in supermarkets these days, but sometimes the oldies are the best.

Method

Hard boil or blow out an egg and balance on an egg cup. Provide paint, glue and bits to stick on – sequins, buttons, bits of ribbon. Or you can make a face with wool for hair, or paint it yellow and stick on a beak. It’s up to you, and always a big hit in our house!

We’d love to see your children’s efforts! Why not send us images of your Easter creations via Facebook or Twitter.
