If you haven’t made any plans yet, why not book a stay in an East Devon half term holiday cottage for the whole week or even just a long weekend? Here are 5 great reasons why the county is a great destination for half term fun!
1 The Exe estuary

Or explore the estuary under your own steam! Hire your bikes from Saddles and Paddles and experience the traffic-free picturesque cycleway.
2 The attractions
Visit the adoption donkeys at Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary and make a friend for life. With year round events, you can immerse yourself in all things donkey!
Otterton Mill is an idyllic historic working watermill in a glorious countryside setting with year round events. It’s also a marvellous place for afternoon tea!
Experience 3 miles of unspoilt countryside on Seaton Tramway’s narrow gauge heritage trains. Travel in style alongside the Axe estuary through two nature reserves providing an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. Check out their special days out during half term week.
For maximum fun whatever the weather, head to the award-winning family attractions at Crealy Adventure Park and World of Country Life.
3 The events
Animated Exeter, between February 17 – 20, is one of Exeter’s favourite festivals. With great screenings of the best local, national and international animation, as well as exhilarating workshops from industry experts including Aardman Animation, exhibitions and more. This event provides a wonderful introduction to the world of animation for children and adults alike!
Join the fun at Castle Drogo this half term by following The Wild Drogo Trail around the gardens and grounds between February 13 – 21.
4 The houses and gardens
Escot Country Park offers a great family day out with red squirrel encounters, birds of prey displays, a world class maze and a ‘scary but safe’ woodland drop slide! Great indoor and outdoor play areas too.
Bicton Park Botanical Gardens provides enjoyment for all ages. The woodland train ride, nature trail, maze, mini golf and both indoor and outdoor play areas are bound to keep the little’uns occupied!

5 The city of Exeter
Go underground with a fascinating tour of Exeter’s Underground Passages – the only passages like this open to the public in Britain. Or get active indoors at Haven Banks, Clip ‘n Climb (particularly good for those with young children) and Quay Climbing Centre.
